1879 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle Pattern Sold for $1.88 Million

The star coin that was sold at the Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ Regency XVII Auction in New Orleans on 19th May was a “Quintuple Stella” pattern 1879 Liberty Head gold $20 double eagle. The coin was sold for a whopping $1,880,000. The “Quintuple Stella” belongs to the popular Stella $4 pattern series of 1879 and 1880 which many like to collect even today. It is one of five examples struck in gold and graded PCGS Proof 64 Deep Cameo. The obverse features the Coronet Liberty Head just like the gold $20 double eagles but with different inscriptions mentioning the composition.Organizers of the sale were happy with the response and have stated that the market looks promising and people are interested in special coins like these.
