Dungarpur was a Princely State during the British rule in India. Dungarpur was founded by Samant Singh, the eldest son of Karan Singh in the year 1197 CE. They were the descendants of Bappa Rawal, the eight rulers of the Guhilot Dynasty, and also the founder of the Mewar dynasty. The chiefs of Dungarpur bore the title of Maharwal and are descended from Mahup. They consequently claimed that they belonged to an elder branch of the family that ruled Mewar.
