2016-05-30 Mon

On 25th May, a commemorative coin was issued by the National Bank of Ukraine to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the country’s first horse-drawn tram system.

The local government had foresighted the need for public transportation in the city of Kiev. Various projects were proposed in 1886, but were turned down due to lack of sufficient funds.

Finally, engineer Amand Struve’s plan was approved and on 30th July, 1891, the first horse-drawn tram wagon was inaugurated. The tram line ran from European Square to the Demiivska Square and became operational by 1st August.

Today, these trams are replaced by electric ones and have been extended with a total of 12 routes. The tram system has proved to be a convenient, comfortable and affordable means of commutation. Many of the original horse-drawn tram routes are still in use today.

The obverse design depicts the 19th century version of the city’s skyline with an image of a horse-drawn carriage in the centre. Other inscriptions include “Horse tram” in Ukrainian Language.

The reverse features a horse shoe; with a depiction of the European Square and the image of a 21st century tram. Other inscriptions include ‘2016’, the ‘denomination’ and the country’s national emblem.

Mintage of this nickel-silver coin is limited to 35,000 pieces
