Three years ago, in November 2013, a treasure hunter named George Hughes of South Petherton found a hoard of Ancient Roman Coins. After methodically searching, so many coins were found at the site that a professional archaeologist was called for help. The excavation went on for 4 days after which the complete hoard was unearthed.

These coins were auctioned for a very impressive value on 19th May. Mr. Hughes was initially told that the coins are “low value” but was later pleasantly surprised when he earned £48,800 at the auction.

The coins were minted by different emperors, the oldest of which dated to more than 1,700 years ago. An extremely rare coin was minted by Emperor Marius, who only ruled for two weeks in 268 CE. Though these coins had lost its original sheen, they were considered to be precious because of its rarity and age.
