Gold was always a popular choice when it comes to Spanish colonial coins. But these coins were not just used for transactions but also had a unique avatar. Jewellery made with Spanish colonial cob coins were showcased at the Daniel Frank Sedwick’s Treasure and World Coin auction that was conducted on 18th and 19 May. The auction is known for these artistic and romantic coins that are recovered from shipwrecks.

A gold 2-escudo coin of Philip III was the centrepiece of a .925 fine silver man’s ring. Experts believe that these coins were buried by pirates as they feature emblems of crossed swords and a pirate’s skull. This particular lot fetched $1,912 with additional buyer’s fee. Another gold 2-escudo coin of Philip III, mounted in a .583 fine gold money clip realized $1,410. A Charles II 8-escudo coin, used as a .750 fine gold pendant for a necklace realized $3,818.75 with the fee.

The estimate price of the ring was set from $1,250 to $2,000 which appreciated to $1,500 and $2,250 because of the money clip. The necklace with the 8-escudo coin pendant had an estimate of $3,500 to $5,000.
