A hoard of 7,500 coins was discovered by a South Petherton detectorist named George Hughes in November 2013. On 19th May, these coins were auctioned for an impressive value of £48,800 at Lawrences in Crewkerne. After the discovery the hoard was then taken to London for research and was released for sale three years later. Research proves that these coins are over 1700 years old and belonged to a turbulent period in England's history.
Some rare coins were struck under Emperor Marius (268AD) who ruled for only 2 weeks. Marius was once a humble metalworker and was murdered by an assassin wielding a sword made by the Emperor himself. These coins were sold for £9270. Coins minted under Leilianus in the same year were sold for £10,120. Other lots ranged from £35 to over £700.
The proceeds would be shared with the farmer who discovered them.
