Shrimant Jayajirao Scindia belongs to the Scindia dynasty of Maratha; he had served as the Maharajah of Gwalior from 1843 CE till 1886 CE under the British rule.
Gwalior was a Princely State during British India. The state of Gwalior is located in central India. The state took its name from the old town of Gwalior, though it was never its capital, it was an important place because of its strategic location and the strength of its forts.
Gwalior was also one of only 9 Princely States that continued to issue its own coinage right up to the time of independence; most others eventually adopted the coinage of British India. This tradition was, too, followed by Jayaji Raje.
He mostly issued copper coins with the denominations of 2 and 1 Paisa. The coin shown above is a two Paisa coin. The obverse of the coin depicts a snake along with an arrow and regnal year 23. The reverse depicts a trident.
