The National Press of Portugal presented a new coin marking the 600 years of the Discovery of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. The day of 1st July is celebrated as Madeira Day in Portugal. It is a holiday marking the date when Portugal granted autonomy to Madeira.
The new two-euro coin created by artist Julio Pomar, who died in 2018, depicts Madeira and Porto Santo surrounded by the words ‘600 anos dos Descobrimento da Madeira e do Porto Santo.’ Julio Pomar died on the 22nd of May 2018, and the image for this coin was the last piece of work produced by the artist, who is renowned for his creative work in various mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramic and literature.
