Sayaji Rao III Gold Mohur Listed For INR 1,60,000

This gold mohur issued by Sayaji Rao III of Princely State Baroda is listed for INR 1,60,000 in the upcoming auction which will be held in Ahmadabad on 8th February 2020.

Baroda State was a Princely State situated in modern-day Gujarat. The Princely State of Baroda was ruled from 1721 to 1949 by the Gaekwads’ of Maratha confederacy.

Sayaji Rao III belonged to the royal Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas which ruled parts of present-day Gujarat. He was a Maharaja of Baroda State from 1875 to1939 and is notably remembered for reforming much of his state during his rule.

Sayaji Rao III issued a remarkable variety of gold, silver, copper, tin and white metal coins during the reign. These coins were struck from Baroda and Amreli mints. The denominations are Mohur, Rupee, Paisa, Annas, Pai, etc.

The obverse of this gold mohur depicts the bust of Sayaji Rao III facing towards the right in the center and the dividing legend ‘Sri Sayaji Rao Ma Gaikwad’ in the margin. The reverse of this coin depicts Devanagari legend ‘Vadode Ek Mohar Vikram Samvat date 1959’ and a Scimitar.
