Gopal Krishna Gokhale a prominent social and political leader was born on 9th May 1866.Gopal Krishna Gokhale was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress and founder of the Servants of India Society. Gokhale entered INC in 1899 along with other contemporary leaders. He was moderate in his views and attitudes.
In 1895, Gokhale along with Lokmanya Tilak became the President of the Indian National Congress and again in 1905 became the sole president. Gokhale was a moderate reformist. During his presidency, he founded the Servants of India Society for expansion of the Indian education.
br> Gopal Krishna Gokhale was a mentor to both, Gandhi and Jinnah. Gokhale continued to be politically active through the last years of his life. He passed away on 9Th February 1915.
India Post on 9th May 1966 issued a 0.15 paise commemorative stamp to honour Gopal Krishna Gokhale on the centenary of his birth.
