Death Anniversary of Alfred Nobel

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was Swedish inventor and scholar who made a vast fortune from his invention of dynamite and ordered the creation of the famous Nobel Prizes in his will.

Alfred Nobel was born on 21st October 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden to Immanuel Nobel, an inventor and engineer, and Karolina Andriette Nobel. He was interested in engineering, particularly explosives, learning the basic principles from his father at a young age. He held 355 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him.

In the 1870s and 1880s, Nobel built up a network of factories all over Europe to manufacture explosives. In 1894, he bought an ironworks at Bofors in Sweden that became the nucleus of the well-known Bofors arms factory.

Today on 10th December 1896, he suffered a stroke and died. He had left most of his wealth in trust, unbeknown to his family, in order to fund the Nobel Prize awards.
