Old Spanish Trail Half Dollar

2019-11-16 Sat

Old Spanish Trail is a historical trade route that connects the northern New Mexico settlement of Santa Fe, New Mexico with Los Angeles, California and southern California. The Old Spanish Trail became the 15th national historical trail when congress adopted S. 1946 in November and President George W. Bush signed the bill early in December 2002. This router is considered one of the most difficult routes.

The United States of America had issued this commemorative silver half dollar in the year 1935 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Cabeza de Vaca Expedition and the opening of the Old Spanish Trail. The obverse of this coin depicts the Texas steer skull and the name of the pioneer Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca. The reverse of this coin depicts the yucca plant in flower and a map showing the trail taken by Cabeza De Vaca.
