Square Copper Paisa of Jayajirao Scindia

Shrimant Jayajirao Scindia belongs to the Scindia dynasty of Maratha, he had served as the Maharajah of Gwalior from 1843 CE till 1886 CE under the British rule. He was born as Bhagirath Shinde to Hanwant Rao on 19th January 1835 CE. In the year 1845; the Maharajah of Gwalior, Jankojirao III died without leaving any heir apparent leading his widow Tara Bai to adopt Bhagirath Rao. Bhagirath Rao sat on the throne of Gwalior with the title Jayajirao Shinde.This copper paisa which weighs around 13.08g was issued by Jayajirao in the name of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of Shah Alam II with Devnagari word ‘Sri’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the Julus formula and mint name.
