Galileo on Italian Coins

The 450th birth anniversary of famed astronomer Galileo Galilei was celebrated on a 2-euro commemorative coin issued by the Italian Mint in June 2014.The coin is a part of a set which includes BU examples of eight other circulating euro coins. The obverse features a depiction of Galileo Galilei based on a 1536 painting by Justus Sustermans. An astronomic telescope is placed on the right.
Another commemorative coin, marking the 200th Anniversary of the foundation of Arma dei Carabinieri, the military police of Italy, was released in March 2014.
