The Nepalese rupee is subdivided into 100 paise. The issuance of the currency is controlled by the Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank of Nepal. The Nepalese rupee was introduced in 1932 when it replaced the Nepalese mohar at the rate 2:1.

The obverse features the side portrait of King Birendra Bir Bikram wearing a plumed crown to left; in the centre is a sculpture from Changu Narayan Temple near Changunarayan village in Kathmandu valley depicting Lord Vishnu riding Garuda; and to right upper centre is an Old coin design. The reverse depicts Blackbuck antelopes (Antilope cervicapra) in centre; and the Official Coat of Arms to right.
