2019-10-14 Mon

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar is the name not unknown to the Indians. From the upliftment of the untouchables in India to the forming of the constitution of India, Ambedkar played a pivotal role in the formation of the modern Indian society.

His work and ideas made him popular among a particular segment of the society who did not approve of the traditional and regressive traditions set by contemporary society. It was two months prior to his passing away, that Baba Saheb took a pivotal step that would shape the course of the life of millions. This was the time when he converted to Buddhism.

Baba Saheb’s conversion not only marked the new beginning that continues to gather more followers every year but also gave lakhs of Dalits suffering a new horizon to view their identity and redefine their place in the country.

His decision to conversion to Buddhism was not impulsive. It was as much an endorsement of a new way of life for the country’s Dalit community. His decision was based on the firm conviction that conversion to Buddhism could really improve the social status of the country’s most oppressed classes, and give them a life of dignity and equality.

On October 14, 1956, the leader adopted Buddhism, along with lakhs of his followers in a simple, traditional ceremony at Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur. Dalits have gained a new identity and dignity and have contributed to the growth of India.

On 14th April 1991, India Post has issued a Re. 1.00 commemorative stamp on the occasion of the birth centenary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The stamp depicts Ambedkar along with his followers leading the Satyagraha of the liberation of Chowdar Lake.
