National Librarians' Day

August 12th is celebrated as National Librarian’s Day in India, in remembrance of national professor of library science, Dr. S R Ranganathan, who had spearheaded library development in India.Born on 9th / 12th August 1892 Siyali Ramamrita Ranganathan or S. R. Ranganathan was a mathematician by profession. His lifelong goal was to teach mathematics. However, when the post of University Librarian opened up in the University of Madras, he applied for it and was appointed eventually. This was a turning phase of his career.
His most notable contributions to the field were his five laws of library science and the development of the first major faceted classification system, the colon classification. He is considered to be the father of library science, documentation, and information science in India.
His birthday is celebrated in India as National Librarians' Day every year. In his remembrance, India Post has issued a one rupee stamp depicting the bust of Dr, Ranganathan in an oval frame with the University of Madras at the background.
