Some men are born to create a history that can’t be recreated; Mahadji Shinde was one of them. Born on 3rd December 1730, he lived a life filled with ambition and grace. None could match his poise and his decision making skills. He was the fifth and youngest son of Sardar Ranoji Rao Shinde. Discipline was a key factor in molding him and his childhood was spent in learning various military tactics. He was only 10-years-old when he went to war.
Where there is hope, there is liberation and Mahadji Shinde proved to be the only trustworthy man to bring the Maratha’s back in a dominating position. The struggle to raise the Maratha Empire wasn’t easy for him and others as well. In 1742, the Marathas were attacked by the Nizam of Hyderabad, but fate supported the Marathas and they successfully defeated the invaders. It was during the third battle of Panipat, the Marathas saw an array of light that would resurrect them. And it was during his reign; Gwalior drastically transformed and became the leading state in the Maratha Empire. When it came to overpowering the Rajput states, Shinde’s army collaborated with the troops of Malhar Rao to bring them down. He challenged the Mughals and conquered Mathura, where he rebuilt old temples and even established a center for learning Sanskrit.
His spirit was indestructible as he gave a tough fight to the British. The Britishers didn’t appreciate the act performed by Nana Phadnis, when he violated the treaty of Wadgaon with the Calcutta Council. It was a response to stimulus kind of reaction by the British as they conducted a military operation and headed to Pune. But, Mahadji Shinde was well-prepared for the worst and joined forces with powerful Maratha Generals to take on the British.
A man with an undeterred will and a passion for life, Mahadji Shinde surely was an able man with a dignified character. Many Mints issued coins during his reign. The Ujjain-dar-ul-fath Mint came up with the silver rupee coin in the name of Shah Alam II and it was identified by sword as the mint mark; then, the Mandsaur-dar-ul-salam Mint made the Mahadji Rao silver rupee coins; silver rupee coins were minted by the Narwar Mint; Gwalior Mint created the silver rupee coins with a unique mint mark of a sword and a flower.
Circumstances and situations challenge you and Mahadji Shinde was a man, who faced many storms of life and emerged victorious.
