1846 Coronet cent with Questionable Colour Sold for $705
2016-12-16 Fri
A controversial 1846 Coronet cent graded PCGS Uncirculated Details was sold for $705 at Part III of The Twin Leaf Collection on 3rd November at Stack's Bowers Galleries Baltimore Expo auctions. In 1793 large cents were minted for circulation with three design types coined that year. No 1815-dated cents were struck and production began again in 1816.
The 1846 Coronet cent offered at the auction had a Questionable Colour. Sometimes Mint State copper coins are enhanced to achieve the Mint red bloom. Cleaned coins can be easily identified from the rest but this kind of colouration on coins is always questionable.
The coin offered at the auction has a faint mahogany colour and faded tan with pale blue overtones. The Auction’s organisers are confident that the toning is original.
