450th Birth Anniversary of 16th-Century Scientist Jan Jessenius Celebrated on New Slovakian Coin

The 450th birth anniversary of noted late 16th and early 17th-century scientist and physician Jan Jessenius (1566–1621) was celebrated on a new Slovakian commemorative coin. Jessenius was responsible for various innovations and discoveries in the field of medicine and is considered to be one of the founders of anatomy.Struck at Kremnica Mint, the obverse features the first public autopsy performed by Jessenius in Prague in 1600. The Church of Our Lady Before Týn is seen in the background along with the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic. Other inscriptions include SLOVENSKO, 10 / EURO, 2016, mintmark of the Kremnica Mint, MK, and MP for designer Maria Poldaufova’s initials.
The reverse features a portrait of Ján Jessenius along with the inscriptions of his name and the years 1566 / 1627 marking his lifetime.
The mintage limit of the €10 .900 silver 18 g BU coin is 3,050 and that of the €10 .900 silver 18 g Proof coin is 5,450.
