Latest Spanish Coin Features Ancient Clounioq Coin-Designs

Spain issued new coins under the Numismatic Treasures series, which feature coin designs that were depicted on ancient Spanish coins that were discovered during excavations.The new €20 gold coin features designs depicted on ancient coins of Clounioq (present-day Burgos). These coins were issued during the 2nd and 1st Century BC and were struck by the Celtiberians. The Romans had founded Clunia which belonged to the Hispania Citerior, one of the two provinces into which the Romans divided the Iberian Peninsula. The coin was primarily used for commercial transactions.
The obverse features the head of a man with curly hair and a necklace. The reverse shows the “Iberian rider” that was seen on many Spanish mints in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. The horse gallops from left to right, and the rider wears a helmet and carries a spear. The legend, CLOVNIOQ, indicates where the coins were struck.
The mintage limit of the new €20 .999 gold 1.24 g Proof coin is 7,500.
