Republic of Macedonia to Issue New Banknotes

2016-11-15 Tue

The National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia will be issuing new 200- and 2,000-denar bank notes as well as getting rid of the 5,000-denar note from circulation on 15th December. Officials state that the decision has been made to rebalance the existing structure of the notes in circulation. The 5,000-denar note was not widely accepted because of its high face value.

The 200-denar note’s design celebrates archaeology and features a terra-cotta fourth to sixth-century icon from the excavations at Vinica that portrays the Old Testament story of Joshua and Caleb and the victory of the Israelites over the Amoreans. A bronze clasp from the seventh century found near Prilep is also depicted. The reverse features the “Decorated Mosque” in Tetovo and some design elements of the “Isaac Mosque” in Bitola.

A Macedonian bride sporting a folk costume and a pendant is depicted on the 2,000-denar note, in the form of a seventh century BC poppy head. The reverse features the 16th century gilded vessel and two peacocks.
