This gold 1/3 Mohur of Gwalior was issued in the reign of Maharaja Madho Rao Shinde of Gwalior.

The princely state of Gwalior belongs to the royal line of Sindhia (shinde) dynasty. Mahadji Sindhia was the first maharaja of Gwalior. His father was the Maratha chief of the Peshwas of Poona in 1750. After the defeat of Peshwas in the battle of Panipat by Ahmad Shah Durrani, the dominion of the state Gwalior was completely shifted in the hands of Sindhia.

This gold Mohur belongs to the 8th Maharaja of Sindhia dynasty. Its obverse depicts the portrait of Maharaja Madho Rao facing right with the legend in Devanagari “Sri Madho Rao Maharaja shinde” around it within the long toothed rim. The reverse consists the coat of arms of Gwalior state with a Devanagari legend “Riyasat Gwalior” within the long toothed rim and the date 1959 VS (Vikram Samvat) in exergue.

The Third-Anglo-Maratha War of 1818 bought Gwalior under the control of the British and it resulted in bringing Gwalior under the local autonomy of princely state in British India. Later, it became the part of Indian State Madhya Bharat which later was merged in Madhya Pradesh in 1956 to join Indian union.
