Worn-out Currency is Sometimes Surprisingly More Desirable
2016-10-24 Mon
In some cases, worn-out notes and coins are more sought after than Uncirculated examples. Almost 3,000 state-chartered banks issued thousands of banknotes from 1782 to 1866, out of which many are Uncirculated ones in fine condition. Circulated Notes of the same variety with a lesser grade like Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated are more desirable.Similarly, a highly graded counter stamped coin is sometimes less desirable than well-worn examples with a clear inscription of advertising lettering.
Experts believe that there is a story behind worn out circulated currency and collectors like them more than the ones which are great looking but uncirculated. It is the item’s historical value that attracts collectors.
A well-worn 10-cent piece issued by W.A. Farr, the sutler or merchant who with his tent travelled with the infantry troops during the Civil War and sold books, medicine, games, stationery etc.
Collectors would prefer to keep this coin instead of owning a Gem Uncirculated example of the same variety. Hence it is not important to follow the norm and always look for better-graded coins or currency notes for your collection.
