Coronation of Emperor Jahangir

This Heavy silver Rupee was issued in 1604 AD, in the year fourth Mughal Emperor sat on the throne.

Today on 24th October 1604 Emperor Jahangir was coronated. Jahangir’s coinage reflects his great interest in art. When he came to power, he increased the weight of coin at least by 20% and later to 25% .The best example of these changes is this heavy silver rupee coin.

This silver rupee was minted in Agra. The obverse side of this coin depicts “Nur-Al-Din Jahangir Ibn Akbar Badshah” with reignal year 1 in Persian within the three circles ( the middle circle is dotted). The reverse side depicts ‘Sakhat Noorani’ Couplet which reads as “Rue Zar Ra Sakht Noorani Mihr-o-Mah” with mint name ‘Agra’, and date AH 1014 in bottom within the three circles ( the middle circle is dotted).

Jahangir is well known for his contribution to the art which gave a new face to Mughal coinage.
