Colonial Period Stamps Grabbing Attention

2016-10-22 Sat

A trend has been spotted in the market where collectors are falling in love with common yet classic, long definitive and pictorial colonial sets. British, French, Portuguese and Spanish colonial issues are in the limelight.

One of Portugal’s mysterious colonial possessions was Tete which is now located on the Zambezi River in western Mozambique. It was earlier a part of the Zambezia colony, after which it was managed under the Mozambique colonial administration. This colony issued 40 major-number, Scott-listed stamps in 1913-1914. These stamps are not expensive and it’s comparatively easy to complete this set. The first stamps were issued in 1913 by overprinting and surcharging the Vasco da Gama stamps of other Portuguese colonies like Macao, Portuguese Africa, and Timor.

The set in an unused hinged condition is listed for $52.20 in The 2016 Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue of Stamps and Covers 1840-1940.
