Samudragupta is one of the greatest rulers of Gupta dynasty and he dreamt of being a paramount sovereign of the whole country. The Allahabad Pillar Inscription refers to the skill he displayed in a ‘hundred battles’ which left scars all over his body.
After subjugating the Northern and Southern Empire he proclaimed himself as a king over the Indian subcontinent. He performed Ashvamedha sacrifice to proclaim his supremacy. To honor this occasion Samudragupta issued Ashvamedha coin, a symbol of victory and a unique method of asserting universal supremacy!
We have got an amazing coin of horse type of Samudragupta for you. The beautiful coin depicts standing horse to left in front of yupa (sacrificial post). There is a legend which is read as “Rajadhirajaha PrithivimAvitva Divam Jayatya Aprativarya Viryaha". Beneath the horse a single syllable "Si" in Brahmi.
The reverse bears the goddess standing to left on a lotus holding a chouri in one hand. The Brahmi legend is read as "Ashvamedhaparakramah".
