Tipu Sultan was born in Bangalore in the year 1750; his father Hyder Ali was a military officer in the kingdom of Mysore. Tipu Sultan is as also known as Sher-e-Mysore, (Tiger of Mysore). He had made a number of administrative changes during his reign which can be seen on his coinage. He had placed AH (Anno Hijri) date on his coin which was replaced by AM ( Mauludi era) in the 5th year of his reign.One of his silver Quarter Rupee which weighs around 2.8g was sold at a hammer price of INR 7, 00,000 at Todywalla Auctions held in Mumbai on 3rd February 2016. The obverse of the coin reads “Muhammad Huwa as Sultan Al-Wahid Al-Adil sanah 1215”. And the Reverse of the coin is inscribed with “Persian Letter ‘He’ with regnal year 5” with eight dotted flower-like clusters around it.
Haider Ali used to have the letter ‘He’ on his coins. Tipu Sultan continued the same practice of showing the letter ‘He’ on his coins.
