Niue Island Recreates the Memory of Mount Vesuvius

2016-08-24 Wed

Niue Island has come up with an innovative coin that is dedicated to the only active volcano located on the European mainland – the Vesuvius Volcano.

Mount Vesuvius begins to erupt on this day in the year 79. Within next 25 hours it destroys an entire town stood in the shadows of the mountains turning the whole town into fossils. Far away from Pompeii, two witnesses have recorded the event which provided a written testimony to the fossilized remains of the town.

The town was well- hidden under the earth until it was excavated. Ironically, the whole disaster perfectly preserved the town which has now become a mysterious attraction of the world. Even today the word Pompeii holds a special place in the hearts of archaeologist and mystery lovers.

Niue Island – a small island in South Pacific Ocean has come up with a mesmerizing coin recreating the memory of the disaster which occurred 1937 years ago. This one – of – a – kind coin reflects extraordinary design.

Struck from 6 oz silver this coin is in the shape of a volcano and is ornately decorated with Roman mosaic motifs as well as the images of Bacchian rites from the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. On the other hand the obverse – which is actually the foot of the volcano, depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth – II surrounded by Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, its issuing country and year.

This Silver coin is an example of innovation. Its unique shape will make any collection special.
