World No Tobacco Day

2019-05-31 Fri

“Smokers will tell you that there’s nothing better than lighting up after a hard day’s work. But most smokers will also tell you that their greatest wish is to put an end to their nasty habit”.

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May. WNTD is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the WHO. The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes.

In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution calling for 7 April 1988 to be an "a world no-smoking day." In 1988, another resolution was passed calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.

Each year, the WHO selects a theme for the day in order to create a more unified global message for WNTD. This theme then becomes the central component of the WHO's tobacco-related agenda for the following year.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on "tobacco and lung health." The campaign will increase awareness on: the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease.
