The Nine-Day Queen- Lady Jane Grey

2017-07-10 Mon

Lady Jane Grey, born in 1537, as an English noblewoman and the de-facto Queen of England and Ireland from 10th July 1553- 19th July 1553 (9 days). Great-Granddaughter of Henry VII, she was an intelligent and pious woman who possessed strong protestant beliefs.

To avoid the passing of throne to Edward VI’s half-sister and heir, the Catholic Mary Tudor, she was married off to the son of the Duke of Northumberland in May 1553. He persuaded Edward VI to declare Mary illegitimate along with his other half-sisters and pass on the throne to Jane. Edward died on 6th July 1553 and Jane was proclaimed Queen on 10th July, 1553.

However, due to widespread support, Mary was proclaimed Queen and Jane relinquished the crown for her. She, along with her husband, was imprisoned by Mary and later beheaded. Despite her young age, she met her end with great dignity and courage.

Even Royal Mail proudly issued this commemorative 62 British Penny stamp in her honor on 21st April 2009.
