The 50 stars represent each of the 50 states in the U.S. and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union. The flag has red, white and blue which were choose as the colors representing valor (red), liberty and purity (white), and justice and loyalty (blue). The US flag is known by different names The Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and The Star-Spangled Banner.

The given flag in the picture has long been featured on US Postage Stamps. This stamp having a face value of 4 cents depicts the American flag.
