The obverse depicts the coat of arms of Palau, an outrigger canoe with canoeist and the denomination. The gold version features a 3D laughing Buddha. The silver version features a gilded Buddha, the inscription LAUGHING BUDDHA and 2017. The high relief silver coins are struck using the latest smartminting technology with the gilded sections on the Black Proof Finish coin field.

The 10th century-old character is known for his cheerful smile. Buddha or Budai is derived from a cloth sack in which he carried giveaways for children and the poor. As Hotei, he became one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese Zen-Buddhism.
