Firuz Shah Tughluq Coins

Firuz Shah Tughluq was the sultan of Delhi; he was a Turkish Muslim ruler of Tughluq Dynasty. He ruled over the Sultanate of Delhi from 1351 to 1388.

Firuz Shah Tughluq issued coins in gold, silver, copper and billon. Gold, copper and billon coins issued by him are bulk in quantity; but the silver coins issued by him are rare. Certain coins issued by him are struck in the name of Caliph Al-Hakim II, Firuz shah Tughluq sat on the throne in the year 752, but the first coin which he issued in his own name was struck in the year 759. For much of his reign, he included the name of reigning ‘Abbasid Caliph’ on his coins; names of the caliphs are Hakim II, Abu’l Fath and Abu’l Abd Allah.

One of his gold tanka with the name of Caliph Abu Abd Allah was listed for 1, 80,000 -2, 20,000 at Todywalla Auction. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Al Sultan Al Azam Yamin Amir Al Muminin Abu'l Muzaffar Firuz Shah Sultani Khulidat Mamlakatuhu’ and the reverse of the coin read as ‘Fi Zaman Al Imam Amir Al Muminin Abi Abd Allah Khulidat Khilafatahu’, (mint and date in words in the margin).
