Of Unicorns and banknotes!

2017-03-01 Wed

Unicorns are a beautiful and strong mythical creature with the body of a horse and having a large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. Did you know that these beautiful mythical animals are depicted on Royal Bank of Scotland’s banknotes?

The note shown in the image beside is an example of The Royal Bank of Scotland's longest-used £1 note design. Apart from minor alterations, this essential design remained in use from 1832 until 1968. And the most interesting part is the unicorn!

The design features a portrait of George I, the King who had granted permission for the bank's formation in 1727. The portrait is flanked by the unicorn and lion of the Royal Arms. The Royal Coat of Arms still is depicted on the banknotes and hence you can catch this beautiful and mysterious animal for you!

By the way...did you know that these were depicted in ancient seals of the Indus Valley Civilization? And further, the Greek writers of natural history thought that the unicorns were located in India, a distant and fabulous realm!
