New Designs for New Russian Banknotes Approved

The new designs for 200 and 2,000 rubles of Russia have been officially approved on 1st February. 200 rubles will feature symbols of Sevastopol city and the 2,000 rubles will feature the attractions of Far East. These banknotes will be put into circulation in late 2017. The volume of the issue will depend on the demand. Officials said that these banknotes will not affect the volume of monetary emission and won’t require additional costs. These notes are being issued to reduce inflation.

The designs were selected through a public three-stage contest that was held between June-October 2016. the final choice was made by an All-Russian vote. 5000 sights of the 1113 Russian cities were suggested during the competition.

The first place goes to famous locations of Far East; the Vostochniy Cosmodrome and the bridge that connects the Nazimov peninsula to Russky Island will be featured on the 2000 rubles banknote.

The second place goes to Sevastopol. The monument to the scuttled ships will be featured on 200 rubles. The Chersonesus national reserve will be featured on the other side.
