Father Heras and Indus script
2016-11-26 Sat
The seals and tablets found in the Indus Valley sites have a pictographic script which still continues one of the major mysteries of the Indus Valley Civilization. The Indus method of writing is probably said to be ‘Boustrophedon’.Many scholars have been trying to decipher the script but none of them completely succeed.
Henry Heras, a teacher in St’Xaviers college (Mumbai) attempted to read the Indus inscriptions and considered it to be classical Tamil. His research and articles are still preserved and referred by students.
He is also the founder of Indian Historical Research Institute (1926), which was later renamed as the Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture.
A commemorative stamp was issued in 1981 of 35 Paisa. It portrays Father Heras and a slab from Mohenjo-Daro. It also bears his name in Hindi and English with his birth year and death year (1888- 1955). To view the stamp click here.
The research on the script is still going on and we all are waiting for it be deciphered. The deciphering of the script will open a whole new window for the historians.
Till then hold your breath!
