A 1930-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle graded MS-64 with CAC sticker was sold for $146,875 on 1st November in New York at the Heritage’s Premier Session auction.

The Cherny Collection of Mint State Saint-Gaudens Gold $20 double eagles excluded the 1927-D double eagle and the non-collectible 1933 coin.

All five double eagles struck between 1929 and 1932 are expensive and the 1930-S coin is considered to be the most challenging one to be acquired.

Only 74,000 were minted, most of which were used as a reserve to back gold certificates. Later, officials revealed that only 3,250 were released, which is why they are extremely rare.

The coin is the second-rarest regular issue in the series after the 1927-D coin. The finest known example of the coin is graded MS-68 and kept at the National Numismatic Collection, Smithsonian Institution.
