Remembering Munshi Premchand on his Birth Anniversary

Dhanpat Rai Srivastava or Munshi Premchand, popularly known with this pen name Premchand was a famous Indian writer and the pioneer of in both Hindi and Urdu literature. Premchand, as a child developed a lot of interest in reading books. He took a job of book selling to a book wholesaler to get a chance to read more books.

Premchand was the first Hindi writer whose writing prominently features realism. His stories generally features problems of poor’s lives, social issues of society, corruptions, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the Indian independence movement. He was so influenced by the work of Mahatma Gandhi that he resigned from position of Allahabad's deputy inspector of schools.

India post commemorated him with the issue of special 30-paise postage stamp on 31 July 1980.
