Napoleon III was born on 20th April 1808. The nephew of Napoleon I, he was the last monarch of France. Napoleon was elected to the presidency of the Second Republic in 1848. He seized power by force in 1851, when he did not reelect continuously. Later, Napoleon proclaimed himself the Emperor of France. He ruled until his defeat in the Battle of Sedan in 1970. He oversaw the modernization of the French Economy. Napoleon made the French merchant navy the second largest in the world. This navy was a part of the Second Italian War of Independence and the Franco-Prussian War.Napoleon faced Prussia in 1866. Otto von Bismarck, the Chancellor of Prussia, sought the unification of Germany under the leadership of Prussia. Over the pressure of the general public, Napoleon had to declare war on Prussia. He was dethroned after his defeat, and the Third Republic was proclaimed in Paris. He was exiled to England, where he died on 9th January 1873.
