Commemorative Stamp of Konkan Bridge
2023-01-05 Thu
A commemorative postage stamp was issued by the Department of Posts to mark the completion of the Konkan Bridge, which connects Mumbai and Mangalore.A long range of technological advancements was made possible by the construction of the Konkan Railway system. Long tunnels have been built with rails without ballast to assure a quiet ride, decrease noise, and make maintenance free. The piers employed were hollow within and octagonal, built to withstand the strongest seismic pressures.
In 1994, the Most Outstanding Concrete Structure of India Award and 1995's National Award for the Most Outstanding Bridge recognized the Konkan Railway for attempting this technique for the first time in India.
Over the years, the Konkan Railways has spurred economic growth in a region that has been handicapped by a lack of infrastructure, despite rich minerals and agricultural resources.
