2023-01-02 Mon

On September 28, 1985, the First Indian Army Expedition set sail from Bombay for a round of the globe on the modest, 37-foot-or-so fiberglass boat TRISHNA. As the first of its type in Indian sailing history, the Expedition has garnered historical significance.

The Team was made up of ten officers from the Indian Army Corps of Engineers. They traveled for almost 50,000 kilometers in one and a half years. Six officers worked on the boat in all; four of them sailed around the world while the others changed in intermediate ports along the way.

Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on the 1st Indian Sailing Expedition around the world in 1985-87.
