In May 1811 Battle of Las Piedras was fought between Uruguay and Brazil. History states The Battle of Las Piedras was a significant step towards Independence for Uruguay. Every year there is an official public holiday in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay on May 18th each year. Uruguay remembers its leader Jose Artigas leading patriot forces to victory against Spain. According to historians, this battle was crucial for the survival of the revolution in Uruguay and Argentina.

At the beginning of the 16th Century, the Spanish arrived in the region of Uruguay. But, due to the lack of Precious metal and fierce resistance by indigenous tribes they meant colonization didn't get started in earnest until the 18th century.

During the 19th Century, the first action of nationalism and independence was observed in Europe across the continent. In 1810, the May revolution kicked the Spanish out of Buenos Aires and made them move their headquarter to Montevideo in modern-day Uruguay, then known as Banda Oriental.

In May 1811, the Spanish met Uruguayan revolutionary leader José Artigas and his patriotic forces on the battlefield at Las Piedras on May 18th, 1811.
