2020-10-05 Mon

The full name of Maria II is Maria Da Gloria was the queen of Portugal; she was born in the year 1819 to Emperor Pedro I of Brazil and his wife Empress Maria Leopoldina.

The reign of Maria II is marked with a lot of struggle, this struggle was between moderates and conservatives on one hand, and these were the people supported the principle of constitutional monarchy established by the Charter, the younger brother and first husband of Maria II. On the other hand, there were the people of democratic and radical elements who sought to reinstate an earlier, more democratic constitution. This conflict was not resolved until Saldanha, at the head of the reform movement known as the Regeneration; this was modified at the Charter with the Additional Act (1852). This remained the Portuguese constitution until 1910.

This silver Pardao was issued by Queen Maria II in the year 1839 CE. The obverse of this coin depicts the bust of the queen facing towards left with the name of the denomination towards left and DEGOA (from Goa) at right. The reverse side of the coin depicts the Coat of Arms.
