Birth Anniversary of Ivan Bunin

Ivan Bunin was a poet and novelist and the first Russian writer to awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1933). He was born on 22nd October 1870.

Bunin, the descendant of an old noble family, spent his childhood and youth in the Russian province. He attended secondary school in Yelets, in western Russia. Bunin began publishing poems and short stories from an early age and in 1889-92 he worked for the newspaper Orlovsky Vestnik. In 1891, his first book, Stikhotvoreniya, appeared as a supplement to that newspaper.

He is noted for the strict artistry with which he carried on the Classical Russian traditions in the writing of prose and poetry. The texture of his poems and stories sometimes referred to as "Bunin brocade", is considered to be one of the richest in the language.

USSR Postal Department has issued a commemorative postage stamp to celebrate the 120th Birth Anniversary.
