Ancient Coins of Bahamas

Prior to the year 1750 there is little information on Bahamas currency. It was earlier a pirate stronghold which led to the making to the motto ‘Expulsis Piratis Restitutu Commercia’ meaning ‘Pirates Defeated, Commerce Restored’. This slogan was struck both on Colonial Seal and the Bahamas penny copper coins which were struck a century later. The Bahamian coins are divided into two periods: Colonial and Commonwealth. It was a British Crown Colony from 1783 until its independence. The 1806 copper coins had the bust of the ruler struck on the obverse and a full rigged sailing ship on the reverse.

In 1966, 1, 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 cents and 1 and 2 dollars Bahamas coins were introduced. It must be noted that the Bahamas one cent has had two distinct colors, three different sizes and three different reverse styles. 5 cents, 10 scalloped cents, and 15 square cents were struck in cupronickel, 25 cents in nickel, and 50 cents and 1 Dollar in silver. After 1966, Bahamas silver coins were not issued for circulation. All Bahamian coins bear the Bahamian coat of arms on one side with words ‘Commonwealth of The Bahamas’ and date. The reverses portray objects from Bahamian culture with value of the coins in words.
