2016-12-05 Mon

Norway is going to release new 100- and 200-krone notes on 30th May 2017 celebrating the country’s maritime industry.

The 100-krone note features Norway’s largest preserved Viking ship the Gokstad, which was built in 900 A.D. and was found in a burial mound in 1880. A portion of a modern Norwegian vessel is depicted on the background. A cargo ship is seen with a breeze symbolised by cubic formations. A globe and the Orion constellation are also visible.

The 200-krone note has a design with the theme “the sea that feeds us”. It depicts a Cod along with a herring and a mesh from a fishing net in the background. A fishing boat is featured on the reverse along with the cubic formations, symbolising a fresh breeze.

Printed in France by Oberthur Fiduciaire, the note’s cotton paper is made in Germany. The notes come with improved security features and a dirt-resistant coating increase durability.

The security features include intaglio printing, tactile markings for the blind, a floating ring, colour-changing areas, three segments designs that appear to move when the note is tilted, a watermark with the head of an Atlantic puffin, and a security thread. There are yellow rings on both sides which make scanning impossible.

The 50- and 500-krone notes will be released on 30th May 2018, and the 1,000-krone note will be released in 2019. Old notes will become invalid one year after their new counterparts are released.
