2,000-Year-Old Bronze Coins Discovered in Switzerland

2016-12-01 Thu

A ceramic cooking pot dating back to the first century C.E., filled with oil lamps and bronze coins was found when a residential space in Aargau, Switzerland was being cleared.

Each of the 22 lamps depicts different decorative illustrations of moon goddess Luna, or a lion, or a gladiator. They also carry a low-denomination bronze coin. These coins date back to 66 C.E and archaeologists believe that they could have been a part of a ritual. There is no practical explanation for the arrangement of the coins and neither were there human remains or ashes in it.

Experts stated that such kinds of artefacts were never discovered earlier anywhere else. They also believe that human habitation was found in this area of Switzerland. They might have crossed the Swiss Alps using technology that was prevalent in ancient times. Even though many questions still remain unanswered, historians and archaeologists are excited about this important find!
