2016-11-02 Wed

Mahendralal Sircar was a Homeopathy and social reformer. He was born on 2nd November 1833 in Kolkata.

He completed his studies in the traditional European system of medicine but he switched to Homeopathy. He believed in the theory of ‘like cures like’ and said ‘homeopathy is superior to Western Medicine’.

To the time he became very well know in his field and cured many great personalities of that time.

During that time in India, there were no proper institutions for higher education in science. So he established The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) in 1876 which was funded and managed by Indians. This was the very first national science association of India.

Dr. Sircar was the one who treated the Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in his final days.

To commemorate this great personality India Post issued a INR 5 stamp in 2009. It has a sketch of Mahendralal Sircar with peach background and below it bears his name ‘Dr. Mahendra Lal Sircar’. On the right corner, there is a bottle and a flower which indicates Homeopathy and the year of issue 2009.
