King George III Commemorated on a Stamp

King George III of Great Britain was crowned today on 27th October 1760 and thus became the first monarch with the longest reign before Queen Victoria.

King George III was the third king of the Hanoverian Monarchs. He was born in England and adopted English as the official language. His reign was full of war, politics, and expansion. During his time, a wind of change was flowing around from the Independent struggle of American colonies to the Seven years war that changed the face world not only in the aspects of political or economic fronts but also at scientific, administrative and philosophical fronts.

George III became unpopular due to the loss of American colonies, but he regained favour due to the victory of Seven-year war and led England successfully in resistance to revolutionary and Napoleonic France.

George III was said to be the most cultured monarch of his time his interest in art lead to the new royal collection of 65,000 books which opened new resources for scholars. He founded the Royal Academy of Arts. He also studied science as a part of his education he had his own collection of astronomical observatory instrument he was also known as ‘Farmer George’ due to his keen interest in agriculture.

Know more and celebrate his time. A stamp was issued on 15 September 2011 of price 76 pence which shows the portrait of King George III and it belongs to the set of King and queen of the house of Hannover.

King George reign became the first step for the beginning of the Industrial revolution. He died on 29 January 1820 due to physical and mental illness which made him blind and was succeed by his son King George IV.
